Building on the great success of our January globalization town hall discussion in Charlotte, the Forum held a similar event in Chicago on May 12th. This time, Allstate CEO and Forum member Tom Wilson hosted the event. The discussion took place at the Illinois Institute of Technology and featured keynote speakers Rep. Rahm Emanuel (D-IL) and Rep. Peter Roskam (R-IL).

The purpose of these events is to highlight the challenges and the opportunities of globalization, as well as new policy ideas laid out in the Forum-sponsored report, Succeeding in the Global Economy: A New Policy Agenda for the American Worker. An audience of more than 100 – including students, labor leaders, business owners, academics, and local policymakers – attended the event, many of whom directed probing questions to the panelists.

CNBC contributor Andy Busch moderated two panel discussions which featured and impressive line up of panelists including John Lutz, IBM General Manager for Managed Business Processes; Jack Lavin, director of the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity; Demetria Giannisis, President and CEO for the Chicago Manufacturing Center; and Jorge Ramirez, Secretary-Treasurer for the Chicago Federation of Labor.

The Forum is exploring the idea of holding additional outside-the-beltway events on this topic. Through the Forum’s globalization report and events like this, we hope to offer new ideas that will show policymakers a way forward on the trade agenda that embraces open and competitive markets while addressing the real concerns of workers and communities impacted by globalization.
