Robert K. Steel is President and Chief Executive Officer of Wachovia Corporation, headquartered in Charlotte, North Carolina. He heads the company’s Operating Committee and sits on the Board of Directors.
Prior to joining Wachovia, Steel was Under Secretary of the Treasury for Domestic Finance in Washington, D.C. In that capacity, he served as the principal adviser to the Treasury Secretary on matters of domestic finance and led the Treasury Department's activities with respect to the domestic financial system, fiscal policy and operations, governmental assets and liabilities, and related economic and financial matters.
Steel retired from Goldman Sachs as a vice chairman in February 2004 after 28 years with the firm. He joined Goldman Sachs in 1976 as an individual and institutional sales person in the Chicago office. In 1986, he relocated to London and founded the Equity Capital Markets group for Europe, where he was extensively involved in privatization and capital raising efforts for European corporations and governments. He became a partner in 1988. He later became head of Equities for Europe. In 1994, he relocated to New York. He served as head of the Equities Division from 1998–2001 until his appointment as a vice chairman of the firm. He joined the Management Committee in 1999. Upon his retirement from Goldman Sachs, he became advisory director for the firm and then senior director in December 2004.
Steel received a bachelor’s degree in history and political science from Duke University and a master’s in business administration from the University of Chicago.
From February 2004 to September 2006, Steel served as a senior fellow at the Center for Business and Government at the John F. Kennedy School
